The latest news on our new style Hamfest :)

Hi All,

Planning is well under way for the NCRG WA Hamfest Weekend on the 29th and 30th of September and the 1st October.

The weekend will start off on the Friday evening with an open evening at the club where anyone is welcome to attend. There is nothing planned except to gather and enjoy the company of your fellow hams and if you haven’t been to the NCRG club rooms this is a good opportunity to see what we are about, and the radical new changes that have taken place recently. This will start at 1800 on the Friday evening and there is no charge for this. If the interest is there we will also put on some food 😉

On Saturday the 30th September, NewsWest and NCRG are co-hosting a Tech Day event with a full day of presentations including;

  1. Contest University – presented by Trent Sampson VK4TS
  2. ‘SDRs made simple – why they make good radios’ by Steve Ireland VK6VZ
  3. A Flex Radio presentation by 2-way Live video conference by Gerald Youngblood, Founder and President of FlexRadio Systems, K5SDR
  4. Use of the Ham Freeware “Radio Mobile” – software used to carry out coverage analysis and link budgets by Steve Kennedy VK6SJ
  5. The NCRG Remote Club Station Facility – presented by NCRG

We are also looking for more presenters from over the entire ham community and we hope to have parallel presentations in the club meeting room (seating 50) and also in our training room (seating 15). Our aim is to have presentations that not only cater for experienced hams looking for specialised knowledge by also for new hams just starting out on this fantastic journey that is amateur radio. The day will start at 0800 in order to cater for our first presenter who is 13 hours behind Western Standard Time. Seats are limited and bookings are essential. Bookings will be online in a similar format to the hugely successful PerthTech event hosted by NewsWest last year and tickets will be $15 each. If we have a lot more interest than the 65 seats, then we will consider hosting the event at a larger venue. Lunch will be available from the club kitchen.

 NewsWest and NCRG will also be co-hosting a Gala dinner event on the evening of the 30th September at “The Henley Brook” Tavern and Restaurant at 9810 West Swan Road, Henley Brook in the beautiful Swan Valley. This will be an evening focusing on all the amateur community, with a number of awards to be presented (more on this in the coming weeks). We have the Marquee booked (the chook pen!) which will comfortably seat 100 people. Meals are ordered and paid for separately by each attendee. There will be a small cover charge of $15 to cover the cost of providing the awards and event, of which $5 will be donated back to the nominated AR club of the ticket holder. The event starts at 1800. Tables (seating 8 each) can also be booked by clubs or groups. More on bookings in the next week or so. Wives, friends etc are also encouraged to attend.

On Sunday, 1st October, we will hold our ever popular Hamfest Swap Meet at the Cyril Jackson Community Hall, Fisher Street in Ashfield. A number of vendors will be present including TET Emtron, Measurement Innovation, and Future Systems. As usual, the event is also open to anyone wishing to book a table. Others booked in so far include the Australian HF Touring Club, SOTA with John VK6NU, VK6 Microwave Group and Fritz Berrer VK6UZ. One of our big attractions to Hamfest has been the raffle. Last year we raffled an Icom IC-7300. This year – not to be outdone, we are raffling the new Flex-6400 transceiver worth $3300 which has been jointly sponsored by FlexRadio, Future Systems and the NCRG. In addition we have additional prizes of Comet and TET Emtron antennas and accessories and many other great prizes. Tickets for the raffle will only be available on the day at the Hamfest Swap Meet. We will again host the Homebrew competition and to add to this, we will also be holding a competition for the best presented mobile radio installation. This will be judged by Stu Brown, VK6BG and the prize will be a $300 voucher to a popular 4WD store (more on this in coming weeks). The door charge will be just $6 and doors will be open to attendees at 0900 (table holders at 0730).

So… block out the weekend of the 29th September to 1st October and enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow hams, learn something new, eat something new, buy something new (or old) and be in the chance to win a Flex-6400 and plenty of  other great prizes at this year’s NCRG WA Hamfest Weekend.
